My Post-Election feelings

I wanted to have my own post regarding the election. It seems that I know too many people who have stated the bold claim that they are going to move to Canada over this election; that Bush is going to destroy our country. I'm not compleatly sure how I feel about that statement, but what bothers me the most is not the outcome of the election, but the reasons most people claim Bush remained in office. The majority of reading that I do of my republican lesbian friends, is that the vote landed as it did because Americans were too dumb not to vote for Bush.

What I think I learned most about this election is actually how conservative this country can be. I read somewhere that the main influence on people's decision of a candidate this year was on morals. The war in Iraq, the economy, Healthcare; they all took a back seat to the morals of the candidates.

The outcome of President becomes more clear when you learn that the majority of most Americans think that same sex marraiges are bad for the country.

I am not sure about other states, but in Ohio, it was tacked onto the end of the ballot, right after Sherrif and Senate, and right before a tax increase...

"Be it Resolved by the People of the State of Ohio:

That the Constitution of the State of Ohio be amended by adopting a section to be designated as Section 11 of Article XV thereof, to read as follows:

Article XV

Section 11. Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions. This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.
"

Ohio voted 3:2 that only such a union of one man and one woman is valid. That a marriage between two men is not legal. I am surprised that Bush didn't win by a 3:2 victory according to this information.

I think most people overlook the fact that Americans are not as diverse as we think. We are still a large catholic/protestant following culture that believes fetuses are alive, and gays arn't real people. Bush is president not because Americans are stupid, but because the majority of them (yes even the popular vote) think that his morals are correct.

Pete:

i think anyone who said "if bush wins, i'm going to canada" should be forced to go to canada, never to return.

suck it up, bitches.

Megs:

Uhm I agree with Pete.

If you actually said you're moving to Europe or Canada because of the outcome of an election then do so. America isn't going to be anymore ruined because of bush as president for another 4 years. there's little else that could go wrong here. Stop making bold stupid statements, enjoy your cable t.v., booze, education system and high paying job, and stop pretending we'll miss you

Jez:

as much as i wanted kerry to win, I agree on the fact that we have to remember that the majority of this country is still conservative. People shouldn't flee, but fight for what they believe in at all times.

we are dividing oursleves. That is not suppose to be the point.

Vadim:

"... the majority of most Americans think that same sex marraiges are bad for the country."
Damn dude, at least you're not as bad with English as Bush. Oh yeah, anyone who thinks Bush's morals are correct needs a reality check. This country is about Freedom of Choice and those conservative morals go completely against the "Freedom" part. Let the gay marry if they'd like, what's the problem here?

Vadim:

Speaking of "escaping to Canada," I think people just say that because it gives them a sense of solidarity after such a loss on Nov.2. Lots of folks moved there during the Vietnam war era because they didn't feel it was right for the US to be there in the first place, so now people mention Canada since we're in Iraq without having a sensible reason to be there. I know it's kind of late to speak of Kerry and how rednecks were calling him a "flip-flopper", but come on, isn't the current administration a flip-flopper itself? First, in 2000, they say that Saddam has no weapons and there's no threat, then in 2002 they say he has lots of WMD and must be "stopped at all costs", and then in 2004 - "No WMD found, but we liberated the people..." How does that work? Now, this is not only flip-flopping but also a criminal act towards a country, a people, and a culture.

Vadim:

Nobody wants to write me back. That's upsetting. I was looking forward to a discussion.

Sundering Seas:

Wow Vadim, I actually agree with you for once. I can't really add anything to what you said, cause you pretty much said it all.
