Well, I know you have all been in silent anticipation about my new job. For the very least I know that you have all been silent, and I'll just assume that it is because of the anticipation.
Work is a black and white, night and day difference compared to MFC. I'm not going to say that it is a bad thing right now, because I am still gathering some information about it, but it is going to take a lot of adjustment to get used to the aspects of this company.
The biggest adjustment is a work day from 7:00 AM -> 3:45 PM. That's just painful. Also, with me coming in at 7, I am one of the last people in my department to get here. The average is 6:15. wow. I mean, it's great to get out early and all, but this is just wrong. I have a 45 min. commute when I don't go to Starbucks in the morning, and nine times out of ten I NEED something in the morning. wow.
The second adjustment is the IQ of my coworkers and managers. I guess it's a philosophy of ******(my place of employment), but the people here are best described as inbred. They've been working in this company for 20+ years, and are morons, but they have vast experience with everything in this company so they're my managers and experienced co-workers. I mean, if you had the choice of 1000XP or +20 int, which would you choose?
The last thing I'll mention is the dress code. I'm all for a fancy looking company, people wearing their best to improve the company image, but here at ******, it's Jeans and t-shirts, and casual friday is flat out Scary. Personally, I still wear slacks and a button down shirt (dress), but I did pass up on the tie already. I just don't want to seem like a douche when the manager's manager where's a ratty polo. I'm not ready to start rocking the boat now, but I plan to make Casual Friday, business suit friday, to shake the boat up a bit in a few weeks.

Are you really sure you want those guys to take their business suits out of storage?

I read an article in one of the various fashion mags I read that stated an employee can always be underdressed but never overdressed for work. I don't know if I completely agree with this generalized statement, as wearing an evening gown to work would seem a bit much, but I think the overall point of it was that it's better to dress nicely for work because you never know who's noticing you. It's better to have a good impression (i.e. more promotable) than a bad one.

Yes dear, I do know that, and I guess that is why I am still wearing my button down, dress slacks, and nice shoes... but everything is just so lax and boring here. I DO want to excel from the people that work with me, and that's why i want to dress the part, but I really am a bump on a log here....
who knows....

well there's getting noticed and there's getting noticed. after all, you want to be getting noticed because you're doing something good. if you dress too nicely you'll seem standoff-ish from your co-workers who are dressed very casually. you don't want to come off as pompous and arrogant.
the development environment is suppose to be relaxed. if t-shirts and jeans are the standard, then you should join them. maybe nicer t-shirts and nicer jeans. but don't end up sticking out like a sore thumb in the way you dress. blend with your co-workers, get noticed by working on visible projects and kicking butt at it, not by what you're wearing. I'm not saying dress like a slob, but don't be dressing differently just to spite your co-workers.
thank goodness you're not working on the other coast... you'd be wearing a tuxedo to spite your boss or something...

I had thought about the tuxedo as an option, for casual friday. I mean, it IS casual attire for me.
But that is my delima... bs a visually stand offish guy in the name of looking good (i'm sure i can emotionally compensate for that), or blend in visually and excell by work (which won't be that hard).
